June Employment Trends
Total non-farm payroll employment increased by 195,000 in June. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.6%. Employment rose in the following categories: leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, retail trade, health care and financial activities.
The number of unemployed persons stood 11.8 million. The number of persons employed part time increased by 322,000 to 8.2 million in June. These individuals were working part time because their hours have been cut back or because they were unable to find full time employment.
Leisure and hospitality added 75,000 jobs in June, which was up from the average for 2013 of 55,000. Employment in food services and drinking places represents most of this gain, 52,000 in June.
Professional and business services rose 53,000. Gains included management and technical consulting services (8,000), computer design (7,000) and temporary services (10,000).
Retail trade increase 37,000 and healthcare added 20,000. Financial activities rose 17,000 in June.
Federal government employment dropped by 5000 a decline of 65,000 over the last 12 months.
Regional variations among the states are significantly. Table A presents the unemployment rates in thoughts states with significantly higher and lower rates than the national rate of 7.6%
